Ten Apples Up on Top

Here's a wonderdul book for car rides..and one with a very catchy tune!

Since Thaleia had high fever yesterday, we stayed indoors most of the tme and to keep her still for 15mins, I decided to just do some activity with her based on this book which counts apples from 1-10. Credits for the idea goes to http://www.makinglearningfun.com/, a great website for art and craft ideas.

Found a duplicate photo which came in handy. Well....Ended up..Thaleia was just interested in pressing the white glue out of the bottle and applying them on Daddy's nose on the photo..so and Mummy was the one counting the apples!

Tell the Time with Busy Spider

A nice Eric Carle book that talks about a spider who focused on building her web from morning to night despite distractions from friends like the pig, cow, dog and cat who invited her to play with them. A decent book to teach about focus and persistence, though I think the book was designed to teach the concept of time. David is usually the one who picks this book and read to Thaleia.
On Saturday morning, we actually spotted a spider in the room and it looks exactly like the one on the book!

Don't be Selfish, Be a Rainbow Fish

This is Thaleia's flavor of the week. A story about a beautiful fish with special shiny scales. Proud and protective of his own beauty, he was avoided by all the other fishes. Lonely, he approached an starfish who asked him to consult an octopus. The octopus advised him to give away his shiny scales to make friends. He did so. And in the end, though he was not as beautiful anymore, he was the happiest fish in the sea he won many friends to play with. Many argue that the book is not about learing to share.. but more about not letting your posessions define you.., and that being pretty does not help you in any way. I think I'm fine with the book..well...it has a happy ending and Thaleia loves to look at those shiny scales on the fishes.

Leslie Patricelli's books are great!

I borrowed 3 board books by Leslie Patricelli from the library one day:
  • Quiet Loud

  • Big Little

  • Baby Happy Baby Sad

Thaleia took very well to his books! She sat attentively on my lap, especially when we are on Baby Happy Baby Sad. The pictures and concepts were very simple for her to catch. Picture of Baby holding an ice cream -->Baby Happy. Next Page : Picture of the ice cream falling on the floor-->Baby Sad. I think his books are great for teaching opposites and emotions.

Was pretty happy with the selection of board books available in the library for young children. Definitely helps to save the shelf space at home. It is not easy to find the right books which can "click" with your child..it does take a lot of trial and error, which could mean a lot of $. Am browsing through http://www.lesliepatricelli.com/ to seek out more titles to borrow for the next round and keep Thaleia's interest in the world of books going..

Uninterrupted Session of Silent Reading

"Dear Zoo" was a Christmas gift from a good friend of mine, who is a happy stay home mum to 2 really beautiful children. It was her first lift-the-flap book and definitely generated her interest in books. We read this to her since she was 7months old and now at 15mths, she enjoys "reading" it herself..

All about Books – I Spy with Spot (a turn-the-wheel book)

Picked up this book at the Popular bookstore in City Square Mall. It was the adorable looking puppy that caught my eye. The book was sealed up in plastic so tightly that it was hard to get a view of the contents inside. I was pleasantly surprised by the interesting pictures and concepts within. It starts with Spot waking up in the morning and looking out of the window, having breakfast, going to school, painting a picture and finally playing with his friends.

This quickly became one of Thaleia’s after-shower books. Daddy turns the wheel in “excitement” while Mummy tries to dry her, pull a romper over her head, wear a diaper before the pages finish. The vivid colours, the pretty pictures and the wheel-turning effect definitely held her attention.

Page 1:
Spot wakes up and looks out of the window. What does he see?
Turning the wheel shows a bird, then a kite, then a sun and then falling leaves..

Page 2:
Spot is having breakfast with his dad. What will he have?
Turning the wheel shows a cup of orange juice, milk, hard boiled egg and so on..

I never knew dogs can drink orange juice. And, this is a lucky puppy, when he wakes up, he has the TIME to watch birds!!
